What We Do

The Steinbach Community Foundation invests monetary gifts in endowment funds and grants out a portion of the income earned annually. SCF is dedicated to enhancing the quality of community life by funding local projects that address social services, health and well-being, heritage, sport and recreation, arts and culture, child welfare and family well-being, educational and environmental needs, and other priorities in the Southeast Manitoba area.

2024 Grant Steinbach Fire Department Inflatable House 2 (sized Down)

Inflatable Fire Education House and Trailer

Teaching children fire prevention and fire safety in a fun and engaging way is a top priority for The Steinbach Fire Department.  This travelling inflatable fire house will be accessible to all children and adults throughout southeast Manitoba for presentations made inside or outside, at schools, fairs, manufacturing plants, or anywhere. SCF made this grant in partnership with the Thomas Sill Manitoba Fund ($22,903.32) and an anonymous donor ($4,294).
Total amount granted: $27,197.76

Expansion of WonderBook Collection

Stronger literacy skills build stronger families and stronger communities. Your gift improves peoples’ lives by enabling children who are learning to read, learning English, or who experience learning difficulties. Literacy skills improve when reading WonderBook electronic interactive read-along books. This grant is made in partnership with the William and Agnes Lepp Family Fund ($977) held at SCF and an anonymous donor ($8,968).  Total amount granted: $9,945.00

During COVID we learned people need people and visiting outside was an option, therefore staff started bringing outdoor firepits to work.  The residents loved it so much, Villa Youville made it a mission to obtain funding for a beautiful outdoor fireplace for their residents to enjoy the outside with the warmth of friendship by a fire.  All supplies and installation were purchased locally in support of local businesses in southeast Manitoba. Total amount granted: $5,000.00

Specialized Volunteer Training

Volunteers who are equipped to handle volatile or emergency situations are better able to help the family stabilize more quickly and more effectively. Stable families can create stable communities. Pooling your gift with others develops funding to allow this project to have a broad, long-lasting impact on adults and children who have walked through a crisis in their life.

NEW Security System

When you make a gift, grants are made enabling organizations to offer their best to community.  SAC hosts a vast number of opportunities for adults and children from pre-schoolers to teenagers and works to ensure a safe space where all people belong. This project includes video surveillance and an entry security system to assist staff in monitoring the safety of all who enter the building.
SCF made this grant in partnership with the Carmen and James Koepke Family Fund ($236) and an anonymous donor ($8,764).

Southeast Cancer Support Services

Database Computer System

Your partnership helped develop a specialized database system to manage information on clients, volunteers, donors, and to gather statistics for research to identify needs in southeast Manitoba.  This program was designed by a local Steinbach computer programmer to time spent on administration tasks to spend more time supporting programs offered and helping those in need. This grant is made in partnership with the SCF General Fund ($8,538.79) and an anonymous donor ($581.21).  Total amount granted: $9,120.00

Relocate Historical Métis Log House at Ste. Anne, MB

This 150 year old Métis log house has been part of the Ste. Anne heritage for many generations and is used as a teaching tool for local schools and tour groups. Moving the house to a permanent location will bring safety and new life to the house allowing more educational opportunities. Métis elders paired with students leads to great to discussions on ways of life, recipes, and more good stories and understanding. Total amount granted: $12,468.75

Replace Security Keypad Entry System

Your generosity has made it possible for Cedarwood to offer improved safety and care of seniors.  This grant replaces an old, outdated security system with a NEW easy to use FOB system that will allow seniors easier and more secure access to their building. This grant is made in partnership with the SCF General Fund ($1,287) and an anonymous donor ($9,959.35).  Total amount granted: $11,246.35

Commercial Gas Stove and Installation

Volunteers with a dream and a new gas stove gives SFRC the ability to enhance food programming that supports families facing food insecurities.  A commercial stove will allow SFRC to expand their capacity to provide hot, nutritious meals during group programming, cooking classes, and emergency food support initiatives.  In the past six months alone, dedicated volunteers have prepared 17 batches of soup, totalling 85 gallons (322 litres), providing approximately 460 meals to families in need. Your partnership feeds families!

Lindsey Banman and Wes Unger have recently resigned as board members after a full term in office with The Steinbach Community Foundation.  As such, SCF makes a grant in the amount of $300 to the charity of their choice to thank them for their services. Lindsey chose Steinbach Arts Council and Wes chose Southeast Cancer Support Services.

NEW Time Limited Spend Down Donor Advised Fund Service

The Steinbach Community Foundation Inc. is excited to announce we now offer time limited spend down donor advised fund service to help assist donors of today in fulfilling their philanthropic goals. The SCF Board wishes to help donors give back to their community by connecting them with the causes they care about. Choose a cause whether health and wellness, arts and heritage, education or whatever is closest to your heart, choose an amount to start your fund, choose your time frame for spend down, and begin advising on grants with impact. Please contact the SCF office to discuss the possibilities and how SCF may be of service.

Please note: all fund agreements are created in accordance with SCF and CRA rules and guidelines and are legally binding.

ONE Insurance has been awarded the prestigious Broker of the Year – Prairies by Mutual Fire Insurance. As part of this honour, ONE Insurance has the privilege and honor of donating $5,000 to a charity or non-profit organization of our choice. Rey ads “We are thrilled to announce that we have selected the Steinbach Community Foundation as the recipient of this donation. Mutual Fire Insurance specializes in the Agricultural sector which is a strong focus for us.  Mutual Fire has been a great partner committed to supporting rural initiatives for stronger communities.”

ONE Insurance won this award for having consistent profitable growth in their book of business with Mutual Fire Insurance, this recognition is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and professionalism of their entire team.  This was accomplished by placing quality business with this insurer where insurance losses were very few, resulting in positive results for both parties and, in the end, also for SCF.

One Insurance is a Manitoba owned brokerage across rural and urban Manitoba with 28 locations serving multiple communities, villages, towns, and cities throughout the province.  They serve more than 40,000 clients across multiple lines of insurance including Personal, Ag, Agri Business and Commercial.

OUR PROCESS

Grant Applications

Granting Process: The grant application deadline is March 31 of each year.

The 3rd Wednesday of April, the applicant will meet with the SCF Board for a 15 minute interview to discuss the project, organization, and answer any questions that may arise.

The 3rd Wednesday of May, the SCF Board will make all granting decisions and all applicants will be advised of granting decisions within one week of the May meeting. All applicants receiving a grant will be expected to sign a Grant Agreement and follow the SCF granting process and policy.

Mary Jane was born and raised in Steinbach where she lives today, and she enjoys her cottage on the lake in Killarney.

Ms. Hiebert began her career in travel in 1994, with the purchase of Harvest Travel Ltd. in Steinbach, Manitoba. In 2014, Holiday Travel was acquired by Canada One travel, where until March 2020 she continued to fulfill her role as General Manager. Presently, Mary Jane is the Owner of Oyster Travel Services in Steinbach.

Mary Jane has a degree in Vocal Performance (BMus) from the University of Manitoba and has performed on stages throughout Canada and Europe. This combination has enabled her to combine her love of travel and music for the past 30 years.

Ms. Hiebert was the President of the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce from 2001 – 2007, a member of the original planning committee for the Summer in The City Festival in Steinbach, and currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Eastman Education Centre and Steinbach Campus Foundation.

Sarah Beaver, CPA, CGA is a partner of Gislason, Targownik, Peters Chartered Professional Accountants. She graduated at the top of her class in 2007 and earned the Professional Level Award of Excellence. Prior to getting her designation, Sarah worked for her family’s business for many years, and enjoys being able to relate to her clients, as they discuss their challenges and successes.

In her spare time, she enjoys baking (as her hubby has taken over the cooking), cheering on the Dallas Cowboys, reading military science fiction, and acknowledges that she is a geek, but not a nerd.

Sarah also sits on the CPA Manitoba Appeals Committee and volunteers heavily with the Beaver family chauffeur organization. Her co-chair there is the family poodle named Yadi. Sarah was born, bred, and baptized in Steinbach, and believes in giving back to her community where she can.

Deb is a life-long resident of the City of Steinbach. She is married to Barry and together they have two married sons and six grandchildren.

In her spare time, she loves being with her grandchildren and enjoys the outdoors, long walks, and listening to music.

Deb enjoys helping others and being involved in the community through volunteering and lending a helping hand to those in need. Being involved in several organizations within the community continues to be my goal today. Deb expresses, “My heart is filled when I can help someone and make a positive contribution.”

Deb is a member of The Chrysalis Fund – a local women’s giving circle.

After being employed by the City of Steinbach for 29+ years, Deb recently retired from a job she loved. She now is happy to continue to be part of The Steinbach Community Foundation and looks forward to giving back to the community in this way.

Lynda loves bringing people together in the community to work collectively towards the “common good”. Being the daughter of small business owners, community development and support have always been a top priority for Lynda and her family. Prior to joining The Steinbach Community Foundation, she was a member of the Endow Manitoba Team for three years and worked in the Manitoba community foundation movement as the Morden Area Foundation Executive Director for six years. Lynda is new to the community of Steinbach and very excited to learn more about southeast Manitoba.

Lynda enjoys riding motorcycle, fancies herself as an artist through painting and sewing, and loves hosting dinner parties with friends and family.

Andrew works at Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP as a lawyer and practices primarily in the areas of civil litigation, property and development, and municipal law. After graduating high school, Andrew moved to Winnipeg to complete his undergraduate degree in Criminology/Sociology, and later to Ottawa to complete his law degree.

Despite now living and working in Winnipeg, Andrew remains fond of his Steinbach roots. He can be found working from his firm’s office in town on occasion and returns to Steinbach often to visit his friends and family. Andrew is pleased to serve on The Steinbach Community Foundation as his way to give back to the community of his birth that helped shape who he is as a person today.

In his spare time, Andrew enjoys playing hockey, softball, fishing, and attending local concerts.

Crystal’s roots are in southeastern Manitoba where she gained invaluable insights into community care and responsibility. After
some time in Winnipeg, she made her home in Steinbach, where her passion for community engagement continues to grow. T

Throughout her career, Crystal has had the privilege of connecting with a diverse array of people, businesses, and various groups
within the community. Her commitment to service extends beyond her professional life, as she actively volunteers with minor
sports teams and Eastman Immigrant Services.

Crystal’s dedication to community development includes roles with various committees, including Steinbach Summer in the City,
Steinbach Chamber of Commerce, Steinbach Arts Council, the Southeast Multiplex, and the Summer Games Bid Committee.
With her experience and commitment to community betterment, Crystal looks forward to contributing to the vision of the SCF
board.

With 26 years of expertise in commercial agriculture financing, Tony currently holds the position of Senior Relationship Manager at RBC, where he supports agricultural clients in reaching their financial goals. Tony’s background also includes a decade in operations management and strategy in the hog industry, giving him a deep understanding of agricultural production and the unique challenges within it.

Beyond his professional work, Tony has dedicated over 25 years to coaching hockey in Eastman and Winnipeg, fostering skills, teamwork, and resilience among young athletes. His community involvement also extends to governance roles, having served six years on the Eastman Minor Hockey board, four years with ACL, and one year with the Envision Foundation, each role reflecting Tony’s commitment to community growth and development.

Tony and his wife Lorie call Steinbach home, where they enjoy family life with their two sons, daughter-in-law, and two wonderful grandchildren.

Ken Wiebe lives in rural Manitoba just outside Grunthal with his wife and has retired after farming for 38 years. He enjoyed his time as a board member for Granny’s Poultry for 24 years and for Menno Home for the Aged for 14 years. Ken is passionate about community building and creating a great place to live, work, and play. Ken loves spending time with his grandchildren, working in his shop, and working on general construction projects. He and his wife enjoy travelling worldwide, whether in Europe, South America, Mexico, or Canada.

Robert Banman is a student at Steinbach Regional Secondary School, Manitoba, where he excels both academically and athletically. Robert’s interests in school are Mathematics and Sciences. He is also a dedicated volleyball player. Robert is known for his teamwork and commitment on and off the court. Outside of school, he wants to help others and improve his community for the future.

SCF Endowment Funds

Gifts are permanently invested and, according to the SCF spending policy, a portion of the income earned is distributed every year to local registered charities as grants.

General Community Endowment Fund

A non-designated fund that provides general support grants as determined by the Community Foundation board.

The Chrysalis Fund

A donor advised fund supported by a community of women philanthropists to support charitable programs benefiting children, youth, and families in Steinbach and the surrounding area.

Named Family Funds

Designated or donor advised funds created and augmented by individuals or families. These fund holders have the ability to recommend grant support to their preferred charity or field of interest.

Arts Stabilization Manitoba Fund

A designated fund established to support the internal operations of the Steinbach Arts Council Inc.

Heritage – Mennonite Heritage Village Fund

An agency fund created to build and maintain operating capacity for the Mennonite Heritage Village Museum.

Mennonite Heritage Village (Canada) Inc. Signature Museum Sustainability Fund

A designated fund to support the governance and management, operational standards, and enhancement of visitor experiences at the Mennonite Heritage Village Museum.
